Soundproofing Kitchen Floors

Which soundproofing products to use and how they are used with different kitchen floor finishes

kitchen floor soundproofing

For most people with their own home and a ground floor kitchen, soundproofing kitchen floors would never be something you need to think about. However, for those living in apartments and such, kitchens can be a very noisy place and can be a problem with your neighbours below.

The main issue with soundproofing kitchen floors is to combat footfall. With a nice soft carpet this would be minimised, but in the kitchen we tend to use much noisier
Vinyl, Lino's, Laminates, Hard Wood Floors or even Tiles. These floor finishes do not absorb the impact of your footfall and to make things worse, airborne sound reflects off these smooth surfaces and resonates.

So ... the big question... 'can I install your soundproofing systems in my kitchen, and can I have my lino on top?'

These floor finishes require a solid, stable base underneath, and most of our floor soundproofing systems are soft to absorb impact.

The first option is to use our
ImpactoMat 5mm which is especially suited to reducing impact noise on concrete kitchen floors.

ImpactoMat™ Product Overview

ImpactoMat 5mm is designed specifically to combat impact noise only, but with it's recycled rubber construction, it is also stable and therefore your kitchen floor finish can be installed directly on top. Unfortunately, ImpactoMat 5mm does not combat airborne noise, only impact.

'What if I need protection from airborne noise as well?'

We have a couple of simple solutions.

Reverso SoundMat Product Overview

The Reverso SoundMat is a totally unique and specially engineered dual purpose soundproofing mat suitable for both hard or soft floor finishes. A slim and effective floor soundproofing solution designed to reduce unwanted impact and airborne noise, helping you achieve peace and quiet in your home.

Different soundproofing layers of mass coupled with an impact dampening layer are cleverly combined in one easy to install product which greatly improves the soundproofing capabilities of timber kitchen floors.

The built in stabilising layer makes the Reverso SoundMat particularly suited to hard floor final finishes, as the majority of all hard floor finishes can be installed on top. This removes the need of a stabilising layer, which reduces time and costs.

SoundMat™ 3 Plus and SoundMat™ 2 Plus Product Overview

SoundMats are designed to reduce unwanted impact and airborne noise.

Different layers of mass are cleverly combined in one easy to install product which greatly improves the soundproofing capabilities of existing timber or concrete floors.

Whether you require peace and quiet from noisy neighbours living above or below, or privacy between floors within your own home, then SoundMats offer an excellent solution.

Our SoundMat 2 Plus and SoundMat 3 Plus systems combat both airborne and impact noise and are particularly suited to carpet final floor finishes.

However, (if not using the Reverso SoundMat for hard floor final finishes) they can also be used, but with the addition of a stabilising layer. If you install a layer of Ply / Chipboard / MDF on top of these mats, it
does not effect their performance, but does give you a stable base for your kitchen floor finish.

For Vinyl, Laminate, Lino, and wood floors, a 6mm ply base should be stable enough. If using tiles, then a 12mm layer would be ideal.

Kitchen Floor Soundproofing Top Tip:

You don't need to pull out all of your kitchen cupboards to get soundproofing underneath, just use our system up to the cupboards. If you want to add extra soundproofing protection for the cupboard area, you can use our FlexiSound 5 underneath through the front panel. It's only 5mm thick and blocks airborne sound very well. As there is no footfall you don't need impact protection!
